In a rare display of bipartisanship, the House of Representatives unanimously passed legislation to strengthen Secret Service protection for major presidential and vice presidential candidates, following two foiled assassination attempts against former President Donald Trump.

The House of Representatives has overwhelmingly passed a bipartisan bill that would bolster Secret Service protection for presidential and vice presidential candidates. The legislation comes after two foiled assassination attempts against former President Donald Trump, highlighting the need to enhance security measures for those seeking the highest offices in the United States.

The bill, introduced by Representatives Ritchie Torres (D-NY) and Mike Lawler (R-NY), passed with an overwhelming 405-0 vote, a rare show of unity in Congress. It mandates a comprehensive review of Secret Service protective standards and imposes uniform security standards for presidents, vice presidents, and major White House candidates.

"Regardless of how every American feels, regardless of how every American intends to vote, it is the right of the American people to determine the outcome of this election," Lawler said during Thursday's debate on the bill. "The idea that our election could be decided by an assassin's bullet should shake the conscience of our nation, and it requires swift action by the federal government."

The bill's passage follows a July 13 shooting at a Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, where a 20-year-old gunman opened fire from a rooftop, killing one attendee and injuring Trump and two others. Weeks later, USSS agents arrested a man near Trump's West Palm Beach golf course who was waiting for the ex-president with an SKS rifle.

Trump has blamed the Biden-Harris administration's rhetoric for the assassination attempts, while Democrats have called for stronger firearm laws. Representative Jerry Nadler (D-NY), who supports the bill, argued that it would be meaningless without stricter gun control measures.

Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) of the House Judiciary Committee pushed back on Nadler's comments, accusing Democrats of blaming the assassination attempts on Republicans. "Next thing they're going to say is, oh, some crazy guy on the left tries to assassinate President Trump, and it's President Trump's fault," Jordan said.

The bill's definition of "major" candidates remains unclear. However, following the first assassination attempt against Trump, President Biden extended heightened USSS protection to the ex-president and also granted protection to Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a third-party candidate at the time.

The passage of the bill reflects the bipartisan recognition of the urgent need to enhance security for presidential candidates. The assassination attempts against Trump have raised concerns about the potential for future attacks and the importance of ensuring that the democratic process is not undermined by violence.

The bill now moves to the Senate for consideration, where it is expected to face further debate and potential amendments. If passed by the Senate and signed into law by President Biden, the legislation would provide a significant boost to Secret Service protection for presidential candidates, helping to safeguard the integrity and safety of the electoral process.
