House Republican leaders are demanding answers after a 20-year-old gunman opened fire on Donald Trump's rally, killing one and critically injuring two others. Questions surround how the shooter, who fired from a nearby rooftop, was able to get so close to Trump, despite the presence of security personnel. Lawmakers are calling for accountability and some are asking for the resignation of Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle.
A failed assassination attempt on Donald Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania has sparked outrage and demands for accountability from House Republican leaders.

The shooting, which left one attendee dead and two others critically injured, has raised serious questions about security lapses that allowed a gunman to get so close to the former president.
"I think there are so many questions that need to be answered, and I don't know who is to blame," House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn.) told Fox News Digital. "I don't know what the breakdowns are, I clearly know there were breakdowns. But let's find out who's responsible and then people need to be held accountable."

National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) Chair Richard Hudson (R-N.C.) described the shooting as a "major security breakdown," expressing disbelief that a person with a gun was able to access a rooftop overlooking the stage.
"I'm no security expert…but I do have some familiarity with rifles and scopes," Hudson said. "And that was a very close distance. And the fact that rooftop was available for that shooter, I just can't understand. So you know, I want to hear what happened."

The shooting has prompted calls for the resignation of Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle from Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) and House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.). However, Emmer and Hudson have reserved judgment until more details are uncovered.
FBI Director Christopher Wray has held member-wide briefings with both the House and Senate to address lawmakers' concerns, but their answers have reportedly been deemed unsatisfactory. Congressman Johnson has scheduled a classified briefing for lawmakers when the House reconvenes.

The Secret Service has not yet commented on the security lapses. However, a source familiar with the House's call with Wray and Cheatle described it as "unsatisfying," indicating that further investigation is necessary.
The incident has underscored the need for accountability and a thorough review of security protocols to prevent such lapses in the future. Lawmakers are determined to get answers and ensure that those responsible are held accountable for the tragic events that unfolded at the Trump rally.
