Edgar Rodriguez Ruelas, a 42-year-old man from Woodland Hills, has been found guilty of sexually assaulting five women in Ventura County between 2017 and 2020. The victims, ranging in age from 16 to 25, were attacked while hiking or sleeping.
Edgar Rodriguez Ruelas, a Woodland Hills resident, has been convicted of sexually assaulting five women between June 2017 and March 2020. The assaults occurred in their homes or on hiking trails in Thousand Oaks and Oak Park.
Ruelas, 42, was found guilty last week and on Tuesday, jurors found that there were "aggravating factors," including that he "represents a serious danger to society," according to a Ventura County District Attorney press release.
The victims, who ranged in age from 16 to 25, were attacked at various locations, including an apartment, a hiking trail, and a home.
In one incident, Ruelas entered a woman's apartment through an unlocked door and assaulted her as she slept. In another, he followed a woman hiking and attacked her from behind.
Ruelas was linked to all the attacks except one after DNA testing of items of evidence. License plate reading technology also played a role in his arrest.
Prosecutors said Ruelas is "one of the more dangerous sexual offenders apprehended in Ventura County in recent history."
"I am indebted to the brave victims in this case who not only resisted Ruelas when he attacked but had the courage to testify in court and ensure he can never target women again," said Senior Deputy District Attorney Brent Nibecker.
Ruelas faces up to life in prison when he is sentenced on June 5.
The Ventura County District Attorney's Office praised the victims for their bravery in coming forward and testifying against Ruelas.
"These women showed incredible strength and courage in the face of unimaginable trauma," said District Attorney Erik Nasarenko. "Their bravery will help to ensure that Ruelas is never able to harm another woman."
The case highlights the importance of reporting sexual assault and the need for victims to be supported throughout the criminal justice process.
