Despite the easing of COVID-19 restrictions, domestic violence rates continue to cause concern, with every law enforcement agency in Utah now conducting mandatory lethality assessments in response to intimate partner violence.

During the height of COVID-19 lockdowns, domestic violence rates across the United States surged to record levels. Three years later, the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence warns that the number of victims remains concerningly high.

A recent tragedy in Utah underscores the persistent threat. Niki Sampson, 47, was found dead in her St. George home on September 1, 2023. Her husband, Eric Larson Sampson, 50, who was already on conditional release for a previous domestic violence incident in July, was the only other person inside.

Eric Sampson has been charged with first-degree murder and second-degree aggravated assault with domestic violence. Authorities noted "suspicious bruising" on Niki Sampson's arms and face, indicating recent physical altercations.

According to police, Niki Sampson kept a journal detailing Eric Sampson's aggressive behavior when drinking alcohol. One entry specifically mentioned her fear for her life.

Eric Sampson initially gave false and inconsistent statements but later admitted to having several alcoholic drinks and engaging in "previous physical altercations" with his wife. However, he denied causing the injuries found on her body.

A third party called 911 after visiting the home and finding Niki Sampson unresponsive. Eric Sampson reportedly waited 10 to 20 minutes before calling for help.

In response to the alarming rates of domestic violence, every law enforcement agency in Utah has implemented mandatory lethality assessments when handling cases between intimate partners. The assessment includes 10 questions that identify victims at high risk for harm. Positive responses to four or more questions result in an immediate referral to domestic violence centers.

Susan Ertel, board president of the Dove Center, emphasizes the importance of reaching out if someone suspects domestic violence. Victims may not know where to turn and appreciate the intervention of concerned individuals.

Statistics from the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics reveal that 34% of female murder victims in the country in 2021 were killed by an intimate partner. In contrast, only 6% of murdered males were killed by their partners.

As the investigation into Niki Sampson's death continues, Eric Sampson remains in custody at Purgatory Correctional Facility in Hurricane. The case highlights the ongoing crisis of domestic violence and the need for continued vigilance and support for victims.
