Prosecutors in Spain have recommended that a second investigation into Shakira's finances be dismissed, just days after the singer's first public appearance at the Met Gala. The initial allegations claimed that Shakira evaded taxes on her 2018 income by using an offshore company.
Days following her dazzling appearance on the red carpet of the Met Gala, Shakira has received some positive news regarding her ongoing tax struggles. Spanish prosecutors have recommended that a second investigation into her finances be dismissed, casting doubt on the allegations against her.
The singer was initially accused of owing 6.7 million euros ($7.2 million) in taxes on her 2018 income. The Spanish government claimed that Shakira had used an offshore company, Maltesa Investments, to evade paying the substantial sum. However, state prosecutors who brought the charges forward have now concluded that there is "not sufficient evidence" of a possible fiscal crime.
The decision to dismiss the investigation is not final, as the investigating judge still holds the authority to decide whether the probe will be shelved or proceed. The judge will meticulously examine the evidence presented by the prosecutors and determine whether there are sufficient grounds to continue the investigation.
Shakira's tax woes stem from her alleged residence in Spain during the period in question. The Spanish government maintains that Shakira resided in Barcelona for more than half of the time between 2012 and 2014, making her liable for taxes on her income. However, Shakira contends that her official residence was in the Bahamas during that time, exempting her from Spanish tax obligations.
In November, Shakira settled a separate tax evasion issue with the Spanish government, agreeing to pay a fine of 7 million euros ($7.6 million) and a suspended three-year sentence. The singer claimed that her official residence was in the Bahamas during the time in question, meaning she did not owe the Spanish government taxes for that period.
Despite her previous settlement and the recent recommendation to dismiss the second investigation, Shakira's tax situation remains somewhat uncertain. The investigating judge may ultimately decide that there is sufficient evidence to proceed with the probe, prompting further legal battles for the singer.
The ongoing tax investigations have undoubtedly taken a toll on Shakira both emotionally and financially. The singer expressed her determination to defend her innocence in court but ultimately chose to settle the previous case to protect her children from the media spotlight and legal proceedings.
Shakira's personal life has also been under scrutiny following her split from soccer star Gerard Piqué. The couple announced their separation in 2022, ending their 12-year relationship. Shortly after, speculation of cheating emerged, with Shakira's subsequent song "BZRP Music Session #53" being widely interpreted as a confirmation of Piqué's infidelity.
Despite the challenges she faces, Shakira remains focused on her career and her children. She recently moved to Miami from Spain and is preparing to embark on a world tour. The singer is also working on a new album, which is sure to captivate her legions of fans around the globe.
