Irish golfer Shane Lowry made history on Saturday at the PGA Championship, carding a 9-under 62 to tie the records for the lowest round and lowest score to par in a major.

Lowry was eight shots back of the lead when he teed off over an hour and a half before the final group of the third round at Valhalla. However, he entered the clubhouse just one stroke behind the leaders after his remarkable round.

The 32-year-old Lowry birdied his first five holes and added four more on the back nine to finish with a bogey-free 62. He had a chance to make history on the par-5 18th hole, but his birdie putt just missed, leaving him tied with Xander Schauffele for the lowest round in a major.

Schauffele shot a 62 in the first round of the 2023 U.S. Open, becoming the first player to go 9-under in a major round. Lowry is now the second player to achieve this feat.

Lowry's 62 is also the lowest round in PGA Championship history, breaking the previous record of 63 set by Nick Price in 1994 and Jason Day in 2015.

The Irishman is now tied for second place heading into the final round, just one stroke behind leader Mito Pereira. Lowry will be looking to win his second major championship after his victory at the 2019 Open Championship.

Lowry's performance on Saturday was a remarkable display of golf. He hit 14 of 18 greens in regulation and made all but one of his putts from inside 10 feet. He also had a 37-foot birdie putt on the 13th hole and a 32-foot birdie putt on the 14th hole.

Lowry's round is a testament to his talent and determination. He has always been a consistent player, but he has taken his game to a new level this year. He won the Honda Classic in February and has finished in the top 10 in three of his last four starts.

Lowry is now a legitimate contender to win the PGA Championship. He is playing with confidence and has the experience to handle the pressure of a major championship. If he can continue to play at a high level on Sunday, he has a chance to make history and become a two-time major champion.
