Country music star Shania Twain shares her personal journey towards accepting the changes in her body as she ages, emphasizing the importance of self-love and body positivity.
Shania Twain, the iconic country music star, has embarked on a remarkable journey of self-acceptance, learning to embrace the physical changes that come with aging. In a recent interview with The Sun, the 58-year-old singer shared her insights on how she has overcome body insecurities and now views her body with a newfound appreciation.
Twain's transformation began with a conscious decision to face her reflection head-on. "I decided that wherever there was a mirror, and I was naked in my house or hotel, that I would keep the lights on, and I would look in the mirror," she revealed. This practice allowed her to become more familiar with her body and to confront the insecurities that had plagued her for years.
While many people tend to avoid looking at themselves naked in the mirror as they age, Twain believes this is a disservice to oneself. "A lot of people as they start aging — and even young people — they don’t want to look at themselves in the mirror naked, and I think that is such a shame," she said.
Twain's newfound self-acceptance extends beyond her physical appearance. She has also embraced the natural processes of aging, such as the appearance of wrinkles and cellulite. "Every month or day that I may notice another sag or another bit of cellulite, I want to know it’s there," she explained. "I want to be OK with it instead of thinking, I have to cover it up or not to look."
This shift in perspective has liberated Twain from the pressure to conform to societal beauty standards. "I can’t change it and I don’t plan on changing it superficially," she declared.
Twain's journey towards body positivity has also been influenced by her demanding performance schedule. As a singer who performs in Las Vegas, she adheres to a strict liquid diet on show days to prevent burping during performances. She also follows an intense exercise routine, which has helped her maintain her physical fitness and stamina.
"I am an athlete, I have to breathe, I have to project," she explained. "I have to pace everything."
Despite her newfound confidence, Twain acknowledges that she has not always been comfortable with her body. "I’ve been very shy about my body from a very young age… to the point where I would not go to the beach in a bathing suit," she previously told "Extra."
However, her experiences in the music industry have helped her to overcome these insecurities. In the music video for her hit song "You're Still the One," Twain made a conscious decision to step outside of her comfort zone and embrace a more revealing look.
"I was 30 when I had my first radio hit. … In that video, I’m braless, I’m allowing the platform of stepping out of my daily self into this world of video-making and making decisions that give me this freedom to, like, do things I wouldn’t normally do in my daily life," she said.
Twain's journey to embrace aging is an inspiring example of self-love and acceptance. By confronting her insecurities and challenging societal beauty norms, she has found a newfound appreciation for her body and its unique journey through life.
