In response to a rise in school threats, Florida authorities have arrested 24 students since the start of the academic year, while Georgia released harrowing 911 calls from a deadly school shooting.

Polk County Sheriff's Office in Florida has made a startling number of arrests in connection with alleged written or online threats aimed at public schools. The Polk County School District Superintendent, Fred Heid, announced Thursday that 24 students have been taken into custody since the beginning of the school year.

Superintendent Heid and Sheriff Grady Judd expressed their determination to crack down on threats towards schools. "Students will be arrested. They will be charged with a second-degree felony," Heid stated. "The school district will pursue the fullest extent of the consequences for any student or non-student member of our community who phones these in or posts something online or social media or email."

As Florida takes stern measures against school threats, the release of 911 calls from the Apalachee High School shooting in Georgia has shed light on the chilling events that unfolded. The calls, now available to the public, capture the frantic voices of parents checking on the safety of their children.

One caller reported, "Boom boom boom," describing the terrifying sounds of gunfire. Another expressed worry about her daughter: "There's a shooter in Apalachee High School. My daughter's there. I need to know if she's okay."

The Polk County officials attributed the rise in threats to social media and the prevalence of TikTok challenges. They emphasized that all threats are taken seriously and will be investigated thoroughly.

Superintendent Heid explained that students often use social media to seek attention. "Many of our students believe that social media is an appropriate place for them to try to garner attention," he said. "We do not diminish the expectation."

Sheriff Judd praised the "Fortify Florida" app, which allows students to report suspicious activity to law enforcement and school officials. He added that some students participate in dangerous TikTok challenges, which can lead to arrests.

Florida officials are committed to ensuring the safety of their school campuses. "The overwhelming majority of the kids go, 'Well that's nuts, and I'm not going to do it.' But a few of the kids say, 'I'm nuts, and I'm gonna to do it,' and then, we're going to arrest them," Judd said.

"I would much rather be standing here talking about this today than you saying, ‘Sheriff, school board, superintendent, you did nothing, and this kid’s been sending messages for months? And now he's brought a gun to school and shot the school or shot up a kid at school,’" Judd concluded.
