The incident drew the attention of the referees, who promptly flagged Crossley for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. The ejection marked the end of Crossley's night, as he had not recorded any statistics before the incident.
SMU head coach Rhett Lashlee expressed his disappointment with Crossley's actions, acknowledging that the ejection cost the team a valuable player. "It's really hard for guys to control their emotions when they get spit on, but they've got to," Lashlee said.

Lashlee added that another spitting incident had occurred earlier in the game, involving wide receiver Jordan Hudson. Hudson reported being spat on by Nevada defender Kristopher Ross in the first quarter, leading to a slapping altercation between the two players. No penalty was called for that incident.
The ejection occurred at a crucial moment in the game, as it kept Nevada's drive alive. The Wolf Pack capitalized on the opportunity, scoring a touchdown to take a 24-13 lead. SMU eventually rallied to win the game 29-24 on a touchdown pass from Preston Stone to RJ Maryland with just over a minute remaining.

Lashlee emphasized the importance of composure and discipline, stating that "there's a difference between playing with passion and emotion. We were emotional a lot tonight. We've got to be passionate. Big difference."
Crossley's ejection highlights the significance of sportsmanship and the consequences of unsportsmanlike conduct. Lashlee indicated that the team would address the issue internally and work to prevent similar incidents in the future.
