Sonja Christopher, the pioneer who holds the distinction of being the first contestant eliminated from "Survivor," has passed away at 87. Her passing was first reported on April 26, 2023, when several of the show's alums paid tribute to her on social media.
The official "Survivor" Instagram page confirmed the news, with host Jeff Probst sharing a heartfelt message: "Sonya was one of the kindest people to ever play Survivor. Every interaction I had with her over the years was lovely. She would always greet you with a smile on her face and joy in her heart. I'm honored that our paths got to cross."
At 63 years old, Christopher made her mark on television history as one of the 16 original contestants on "Survivor" in 2000. Known for her infectious spirit, she would often boost tribe morale by singing and playing the ukulele during her brief appearance on the show.
Despite her early departure, Christopher remained an avid fan of "Survivor," not missing a single episode in the show's 17-year history. In a video shared on social media in 2017, she expressed her admiration for the show and its contestants: "I've recently turned 80 and I intend to watch the next 17 years of Survivor, and then I can happily hike off to the giant Tribal Council in the sky."
Christopher's legacy extends beyond her time on "Survivor." She became a symbol of resilience and determination, proving that age is just a number when it comes to pursuing one's dreams. Her spirit will continue to inspire countless others, both inside and outside the "Survivor" community.
As news of her passing spread, the "Survivor" community took to social media to express their condolences and pay tribute to the woman who paved the way for countless others.
"Today, the legend herself Sonja Christopher of Season One passed away," wrote Liz Wilcox, a current contestant on "Survivor" season 46. "I had the pleasure of meeting her on Christmas. She had so much spunk + love for ‘Survivor’ and what the show brought to her life."
Parvati Shallow, the iconic "Survivor" winner known for her strategic gameplay, shared her memories of Christopher in an Instagram post: "Sonja was the first person voted off Survivor, but her impact was far greater than any placement could ever show. She set the tone for the rest of us that no matter what happens or what your age or background might be, you are always in control of your own destiny."
Sandra Diaz-Twine, the only two-time winner in "Survivor" history, also took to social media to express her sadness: "Sonja was an incredible woman who left an unforgettable mark on our show. Her kindness and determination inspired us all and she will be greatly missed."
Christopher's passing is a reminder of the enduring legacy of "Survivor" and the diverse characters that have made the show so beloved. Sonja Christopher may have been the first to depart from the island, but her spirit and love for the game will continue to live on in the hearts of "Survivor" fans everywhere.
