Southern Miss Cornerback Marcus "M.J." Daniels Tragically Killed in Mississippi Shooting

Marcus "M.J." Daniels, a starting cornerback for the Southern Miss Golden Eagles, was shot and killed in an apartment complex in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, on Tuesday night. He was 21 years old.
Southern Miss University is mourning the tragic loss of Marcus "M.J." Daniels, a promising young defensive back who was shot and killed in Mississippi on Tuesday night. The 21-year-old was a rising star on the Golden Eagles football team, having started at cornerback last season.
According to Forrest County Coroner Lisa Klem, Daniels' body was sent to a medical examiner for an autopsy. The shooting took place at an apartment complex in Hattiesburg, but no arrests have been made and the circumstances surrounding his death are under investigation.
"We are asking the community for their help and to come forward with any information pertaining to this tragic incident and the untimely death of Marcus Daniels," said Hattiesburg police in a statement. "We will share as much information as possible without jeopardizing the investigation. We are working closely with the university and local officials."
Daniels was a key contributor to the Golden Eagles' defense in 2023, starting 12 games and tying for the team lead with three interceptions. He also recorded 29 tackles. He was expected to be a starter again in the upcoming 2024 season.
Head coach Will Hall expressed his shock and sadness over Daniels' death in a statement released by the university. "We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Marcus Daniels. He was a talented football player and a valued member of our team. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time."
Daniels' death has sent shockwaves through the Southern Miss community and the college football world. Teammates, coaches, and fans alike have expressed their condolences and disbelief over the senseless loss of such a promising young life.
The university has announced that counseling services will be made available to Daniels' teammates and other members of the school community who have been affected by his death.
Daniels played his first two collegiate seasons at Ole Miss before transferring to Southern Miss in 2023. He was a native of Hattiesburg and graduated from Oak Grove High School.
