Amidst the ongoing war in Ukraine, NATO allies are increasing their military spending, while the frontline city of Starokostiantyniv endures relentless Russian attacks ahead of the arrival of F-16 fighter jets that could potentially disrupt the conflict.

Starokostiantyniv, a city of around 30,000 in western Ukraine, has become a frequent target of Russian strikes, with the most recent attack occurring on June 27. Explosions reverberate across the pre-dawn sky as Ukrainian air defenses intercept Russian attacks, a grim reality for the city's residents.

The attacks have often targeted the local air base, seen as a potential home for the upcoming U.S.-designed F-16 fighter jets that Ukraine hopes will bolster its air force and aid in the fight against Russian advancements. Moscow, aware of this possibility, has launched assaults on airfields believed to house the aircraft.

Despite the danger, residents of Starokostiantyniv, nicknamed Starkon, have learned to navigate the constant threat. Local officials acknowledge the challenges faced by the city, including the difficulties posed by the air strikes.

Meanwhile, Russia's defense ministry has claimed to have destroyed five Ukrainian SU-27 fighter jets at an airfield in Poltava region, a claim disputed by Ukraine. Military analysts speculate that Russia is targeting air base infrastructure to hinder the deployment of F-16s and make their use in battle more challenging.

Ukraine's air defense systems, already stretched thin, will likely face further strain as they attempt to protect the prized fighter jets. Moving the planes around airfields is expected to become a necessity in order to avoid being overwhelmed by Russian missiles.

After a recent attack, regional Governor Serhiy Tyurin reported that air defenses had successfully intercepted nine targets over the region, following warnings of drones heading towards Starokostiantyniv.

Despite the danger and inconvenience caused by frequent power outages, residents of the city maintain a sense of resilience. Road works continue, and families and teenagers seek respite at the local beach.

Local newspaper editor Iryna Sapchuk, whose parents' home was damaged in a previous attack, notes the presence of debris from a missile lodged in a cherry tree near her parents' window.

Starokostiantyniv's history as a bastion of defense and a nerve center for independence fighters during World War One contributes to the city's unwavering spirit. According to local official Vasyl Muliar, "This was always a center of resistance."
