Los Angeles Rams quarterback Stetson Bennett has returned to the team after taking a leave of absence last year to address mental health concerns.
Los Angeles Rams quarterback Stetson Bennett has made a triumphant return to the team after taking a year-long hiatus to prioritize his mental health. The former Georgia star, who led the Bulldogs to back-to-back national championships, confirmed his return to reporters after a recent practice session.
Bennett, 26, was drafted by the Rams in the fourth round of the 2023 NFL draft. He participated in the team's offseason program and preseason last year, showcasing his skills as a promising backup to veteran signal-caller Matthew Stafford. However, just before the start of the regular season, Bennett's Rams journey took an unexpected turn.
Citing non-football-related illness, Bennett was placed on the reserve list, leaving many wondering about his well-being. In a recent interview, Bennett shed light on his decision to step away from the game.
"It was good. I went back home, and thank goodness that Les [Snead] and coach [Sean] McVay and everybody involved allowed me to do that," Bennett said, expressing gratitude to the Rams' management for their support during his absence.
When asked directly if mental health played a role in his decision, Bennett candidly responded, "Yeah, I'd say that." Bennett declined to elaborate further, respecting the privacy of his personal journey.
The Georgia native emphasized that his return to the Rams was the culmination of numerous conversations with the team's leadership. Bennett acknowledged the difficulty of the decision but maintained that it was necessary at the time.
Bennett now finds himself competing for the Rams' backup quarterback position alongside veteran Jimmy Garoppolo, who was acquired in March. Garoppolo, however, is set to miss the first two games of the season due to a suspension for violating the NFL's performance-enhancing drug policy.
Bennett's return has been met with enthusiasm by the Rams' coaching staff. Offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur praised Bennett's focus and determination since rejoining the team.
"He's in a good place and he is out here... He's come to work every single day focused with the intent of getting better and that's all you can ask these guys," LaFleur said of Bennett.
Bennett's story serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of prioritizing mental health, even in the high-stakes world of professional sports. His return to the Rams is a testament to his resilience and the supportive environment fostered by the team. As he prepares for the upcoming season, Bennett's presence will undoubtedly provide the Rams with both on-field talent and a powerful example of perseverance.
