Gracie Hunt, daughter of the Kansas City Chiefs owner, and author Demi-Leigh Tebow discussed their take on Harrison Butker's controversial commencement speech on Fox News.
Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker's commencement speech at Benedictine College has sparked a polarizing debate, garnering both praise and criticism for its outspoken views on family roles and social issues.
Gracie Hunt, daughter of Chiefs CEO Clark Hunt, weighed in on the speech during an appearance on Fox News Channel's "Fox & Friends." She shared her personal experience of having a stay-at-home mother and expressed her respect for Butker's Christian faith.
"I can only speak from my own experience, which is I've had the most incredible mom who had the ability to stay home and be with us as kids growing up," Hunt said. "I understand that there are many women out there who can't make that decision. But for me and my life, I know it was really formative and in shaping me and my siblings into who we are."
Butker's speech, which was rooted in his Catholic beliefs, drew particular attention for his comments on family dynamics and gender roles. He encouraged women to embrace the "most important titles of all" as wives and mothers, sparking a backlash from some who felt his views were outdated and discriminatory.
In response to the criticism, the NFL released a statement clarifying that Butker's views were not representative of the league's stance on inclusion. "Harrison Butker gave a speech in his personal capacity," Jonathan Beane, the NFL's senior vice president and chief diversity and inclusion officer, told People magazine. "His views are not those of the NFL as an organization. The NFL is steadfast in our commitment to inclusion, which only makes our league stronger."
Butker's speech also raised concerns for its references to Pride month, which he described as a "deadly sin sort of pride." He also criticized President Biden's support for abortion rights, suggesting that it contradicted Catholic teachings.
The Chiefs organization has not publicly commented on Butker's speech. However, the Carolina Panthers, who drafted Butker in 2017, have released a statement distancing themselves from his views.
"The Carolina Panthers organization does not endorse or condone the personal views expressed by former player Harrison Butker," the statement read. "We believe in the equality and respect of all people, regardless of race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or any other defining characteristic."
Butker's speech has generated a wide range of reactions, with some praising his courage for speaking his mind and others criticizing his narrow-minded perspective. The controversy highlights the ongoing debates over gender roles, LGBTQIA+ rights, and the intersection of faith and public life in modern society.
