Kyle Rice, a paramedic and father of two, embarks on an arduous daily commute from his home in Delaware to his workplace in Manhattan, utilizing multiple modes of transportation to save money and balance work with family life.
Kyle Rice, a dedicated paramedic and father of two, has captured the attention of social media with his extraordinary commute from his home in Delaware to his workplace in Manhattan. This super commuter's daily journey, spanning multiple states, reveals the extreme lengths some individuals are willing to go to secure a livable wage.
Rice's initial commute involved driving to Wilmington train station in Delaware, boarding a train to Grand Central in New York City, transferring to a subway to the World Trade Center, and finally walking a short distance to his office. However, thanks to advice from his TikTok followers, he has since optimized his route by incorporating the Newark PATH train, saving him a significant amount of time.
The new route now takes Rice approximately an hour and 45 minutes door-to-door, allowing him to leave work at around 5:20 pm and still be home with his children by 7:30 pm. Despite the long commute, Rice insists that the financial benefits of working in New York City outweigh the challenges.
"The job was a significant raise for me compared to what I was making here in Delaware," he explained. "It's Manhattan money with the cost of living of Delaware."
Rice's employer provides commuter benefits and Amtrak points, which help reduce his transportation expenses. To further save money, he prepares food and snacks to avoid pricey purchases on the train.
The super commuter lifestyle has become increasingly popular as individuals seek to balance affordable living with lucrative employment opportunities. "More people are understanding the benefit of living where they are and getting paid where they end up," Rice remarked.
While there are drawbacks to super commuting, such as time away from family and the potential for delays, Rice believes the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. "Even when you're on the train, that's workable time," he said. "There's Wi-Fi in the train that's free, so I can be doing work, checking emails with schoolwork, whatever."
Rice emphasizes the importance of considering whether super commuting aligns with one's lifestyle and goals. "I see this becoming more of a more of a popular way of working, because you get to individualize your experience personally and professionally," he added. "You can pick the area you want to work in and as long as it's within a commutable distance, you can be there."
From Rice's perspective, the unique combination of big-city networking opportunities and affordable living expenses makes super commuting a viable option. "It's a really incredible experience," he said.
In addition to the financial benefits, Rice enjoys the scenic aspects of his commute, particularly the breathtaking train ride from New York City to Albany. "That was gorgeous," he remarked.
Rice's story serves as a testament to the sacrifices that some individuals are willing to make to provide a better life for themselves and their families. While super commuting may not be suitable for everyone, it offers a glimpse into the innovative and extreme measures that people are taking to survive in today's challenging economic climate.
