Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker has received support from teammates Chris Jones and former wide receiver Cole Beasley after his address to Benedictine College graduates sparked criticism for its Christian messaging.
Despite facing backlash for his commencement speech at Benedictine College, Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker has found support from his teammate Chris Jones and former wide receiver Cole Beasley. Butker's address, which centered on his Christian values, drew criticism from some who objected to his religious views.
Jones took to Twitter to express his unwavering support for Butker, writing, "I love you @buttkicker7! My brotha." In a response to a petition calling for the Chiefs to release Butker, Jones declared, "Negative."
Beasley, who retired from the NFL last season, also voiced his endorsement of Butker's speech, tweeting, "with (Butker)."
Gracie Hunt, the daughter of Chiefs CEO Clark Hunt, offered a measured response when questioned about Butker's remarks during an appearance on "Fox & Friends." While acknowledging the importance of stay-at-home mothers in her own life, Hunt stated, "I understand that there are many women out there who can't make that decision." She added, "For sure, and I really respect Harrison and his Christian faith and what he's accomplished on and off the field."
Despite the support from Jones and Beasley, Butker's speech has faced criticism from some who argue that it was inappropriate for a public figure to promote their religious views in a commencement address. A petition on Change.org calling for the Chiefs to release Butker has garnered over 100,000 signatures, expressing disapproval of his comments.
The controversy surrounding Butker's speech highlights the ongoing debate over the role of religion in public life. While some individuals believe that religious speech should be restricted to private settings, others argue that it is a fundamental right protected by the First Amendment.
The Chiefs organization has yet to comment on the matter, and it remains to be seen whether Butker will face any repercussions from his speech. However, the support from his teammates suggests that he retains the backing of his fellow players despite the controversy.
Meanwhile, Butker has not directly addressed the criticism, but he has continued to share his religious beliefs on social media. In a recent post on Instagram, he wrote, "We are not called to be liked, but to be obedient. When we live our lives out for our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ we will never please everyone but we will hear the sweet words, 'Well done, my good and faithful servant.'"
The unfolding controversy has sparked discussions about the intersection of faith, sports, and public discourse. As the debate continues, it will be interesting to observe how Butker's speech influences the way in which players express their religious views in the future.
