**Houston, Texas** - A suspect is in custody following the shooting death of a Harris County Constable Deputy on his way to work on Tuesday morning.
At a news conference later that day, Houston Police Department Chief Noe Diaz announced that authorities had identified the deceased officer as Deputy Maher Husseini. Diaz stated that the suspect, a Middle Eastern male approximately 35-40 years old, 5'9" tall, and weighing 200 pounds, was apprehended after a brief pursuit.

According to police, Husseini was driving his personal vehicle when he stopped at a red light, and an unknown assailant exited a nearby vehicle and approached his window. The suspect then allegedly fired multiple shots, striking Husseini.
The suspect's vehicle, a charcoal-gray Chevy Impala with a distinctive bumper disfigurement, was spotted by the Galveston County Sheriff's Office and pursued until it crashed into the water near Old Causeway in Galveston. The suspect was taken into custody at the scene.

Husseini, who joined Constable Mark Herman's Office in 2021, was described as a dedicated and hardworking officer who patrolled the South-Central District.
"Please keep Deputy Constable Husseini in your prayers," the Harris County Constable Precinct 4 posted on social media.

Chief Diaz expressed the department's condolences to Husseini's family and colleagues. "Any loss of life is trauma," Diaz said. "Any death is terrible in this community. Being a deputy, it just brings us closer as police officers who are here to serve the community. It shouldn't happen."
Authorities have not yet released the suspect's name or provided further details about the motive for the shooting.
Meanwhile, the Harris County Constable Precinct 4 has established a memorial fund in Husseini's honor. Those wishing to contribute can visit the fund's website or contact the precinct's office for more information.
