Crooks was spotted at the event around 5:10 p.m. on July 13th. Law enforcement officials designated him as a "suspicious person of interest" due to his lack of movement towards the venue. Crooks was observed walking around and using a rangefinder, which heightened suspicions.

At approximately 5:41 p.m., just 20 minutes before Trump took the stage, a sniper spotted Crooks on his phone and rangefinder and alerted the "Sniper Group" chat. The Secret Service also identified Crooks on the roof of a building around 150 yards from the podium.

Despite the identification of suspicious individuals, a whistleblower alleged that an officer assigned to monitor the building's roof left their post due to excessive heat.

Less than 20 minutes after being spotted on the roof, Crooks fired a volley of shots at Trump. The Secret Service swiftly incapacitated Crooks, preventing any casualties.
