Washington, D.C. - The Republican National Committee (RNC) headquarters in Washington, D.C., was evacuated on Wednesday morning due to a suspicious package found on the premises. Police promptly responded to the scene and confirmed the evacuation, bringing in a hazmat team to investigate the nature of the package.
The suspicious package was discovered at approximately 7:45 a.m. at the 300 block of First Street, SE. According to a statement released by the U.S. Capitol Police (USCP), the package was cleared by their Hazardous Incident Response Division. The contents of the package were revealed to be two vials of blood.
An investigation is currently underway to determine the source and nature of the suspicious package and its contents. The evacuation of the RNC headquarters was conducted as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of those present.
The discovery of the suspicious package prompted a significant police presence outside the RNC headquarters. Officers were seen wearing uniforms identifying them as bomb techs and K-9 units assisted in the investigation. DC Fire and EMS also responded to the scene to provide support to law enforcement.
The sidewalk on the opposite side of the street of the RNC and the Capitol Hill club was initially closed off as a security measure. However, with the security posture now loosening, the sidewalk has been reopened.
The RNC has not released any additional information regarding the incident. Police continue to investigate the matter, and further updates are expected as they become available.
The incident comes amid heightened security concerns in Washington, D.C., following the Capitol riots on January 6, 2021. The ongoing investigation into the suspicious package will shed light on the potential threat posed and the measures being taken to safeguard the city.
