Tensions Flare: Belichick and Kraft's Awkward Encounter at Brady's Roast

Former Patriots star Julian Edelman reveals the palpable tension between ex-head coach Bill Belichick and team owner Robert Kraft before Netflix's "The Roast of Tom Brady."

Before Netflix's highly anticipated "The Roast of Tom Brady," a noticeable air of tension permeated the green room, according to former New England Patriots star Julian Edelman. Edelman, alongside fellow ex-Patriot Drew Bledsoe, delved into the uncomfortable pre-show encounter on a recent episode of the "Games with Names" podcast.

Initially, Belichick seemed jovial, engaging in camaraderie with his former players, including Edelman, Bledsoe, Randy Moss, and Rob Gronkowski. "He's having fun, he's talking war stories, talking rookies," recounted Edelman. However, the atmosphere abruptly shifted upon the arrival of longtime team owner Robert Kraft.

"The tension in that room, though, could cut f---ing glass," asserted Edelman. "It was so awkward. … I was just like, 'Oh s---, this could be some fireworks.' I just walked away."

Bledsoe corroborated the awkwardness, describing it as "some crazy s---" and emphasizing that the tension was "very, very real." He noted, however, that Belichick and Kraft did attempt a brief reconciliation.

"They did break it down and got together for 10 minutes at least, the two of them," said Bledsoe.

During the roast, comedian Kevin Hart urged Belichick and Kraft to down shots of alcohol as a gesture of goodwill. Kraft acknowledged Belichick's remarkable coaching legacy and expressed gratitude for their time together.

Yet, tensions between Kraft and Belichick have reportedly escalated in recent years. After Belichick's departure from New England earlier this year, Kraft allegedly contacted Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank to express concerns about the coach's trustworthiness, according to an ESPN report.

Belichick's tenure with the Patriots yielded six Super Bowls, but the team has struggled since Brady's departure. The 2023 season saw New England finish with a dismal 4-13 record - Belichick's first without a single playoff victory.

The relationship dynamics within the Patriots organization remain a subject of speculation. The encounter at Brady's roast underscores the potential for lingering tensions between key figures despite their shared history.
