PROSPER, Texas - A Texas preschool teacher has been arrested after four students at Primrose School of Prosper were exposed to THC in their classroom.
The students, all toddlers, are recovering and no one required medical attention, according to FOX 4 News Dallas-Fort Worth.
The teacher, whose name has not been released, was arrested on Tuesday and charged with possession of a controlled substance.
The incident occurred on Monday when the students ate THC gummies that were found in the classroom. It is unclear how the gummies got into the classroom.
The school has released a statement saying that they are cooperating with the investigation and that the safety of their students is their top priority.
"We are deeply concerned about this incident and are taking all necessary steps to ensure the safety of our students," the statement said. "We are cooperating fully with the investigation and will continue to work with law enforcement to determine how this happened."
The Primrose School of Prosper is a private preschool that serves children ages 6 weeks to 6 years old. The school has been in operation since 2006.
This is not the first time that a preschool teacher has been arrested for giving students THC. In 2019, a preschool teacher in Colorado was arrested after giving students THC-laced cookies.
The use of THC in schools is a growing concern. In 2021, the National Institute on Drug Abuse reported that the number of adolescents who reported using THC in the past year had increased by 50%.
THC is the psychoactive compound in marijuana. It can cause a variety of effects, including euphoria, relaxation, and altered perception. THC can also impair judgment and coordination.
The use of THC in children can be particularly dangerous. Children's brains are still developing, and THC can interfere with this development. THC can also cause anxiety, paranoia, and hallucinations in children.
If you are concerned about your child's exposure to THC, please talk to your doctor.
