Pope Francis has recently clarified the Catholic Church's position on same-sex unions in an interview with "60 Minutes." Answering a question about the Church's recent document approving "blessings" of individual Catholics who are in same-sex unions, the pontiff explained that such blessings are not the same as the sacrament of marriage.

"Last year you decided to allow Catholic priests to bless same-sex couples," journalist Norah O'Donnell asked. "That's a big change. Why?"

Pope Francis responded, "No, what I allowed was not to bless the union. That cannot be done because that is not the sacrament [of marriage]. I cannot. The Lord made it that way."

The pope continued, "But to bless each person, yes. The blessing is for everyone. For everyone. To bless a homosexual-type union, however, goes against the given right, against the law of the Church. But to bless each person, why not? The blessing is for all. Some people were scandalized by this. But why? Everyone! Everyone!"

This clarification echoes the Church's longstanding teaching that marriage is an indissoluble union between a man and a woman. Same-sex unions, therefore, cannot be considered valid marriages within the Catholic tradition.

The pope's distinction between blessing individual people and blessing same-sex unions is based on the belief that all people are created in the image and likeness of God and are deserving of God's love and blessing.

However, the Church does not recognize same-sex unions as equivalent to marriage because it believes that marriage is a unique and exclusive bond between a man and a woman.

Pope Francis' clarification comes amidst ongoing debate within the Church about the issue of same-sex unions. Some Catholics argue that the Church should be more inclusive of LGBTQ+ people, while others maintain that the Church's traditional teachings on marriage must be upheld.

The pope's distinction between blessing individual people and blessing same-sex unions is an attempt to reconcile these competing perspectives.

While affirming the Church's teaching on marriage, Pope Francis also emphasizes the importance of compassion and welcome towards LGBTQ+ people. He has repeatedly called for respect for all people, regardless of their sexual orientation.

The pope's clarification on same-sex unions is a reminder that the Church's teachings are not set in stone but can evolve over time. As society changes, the Church is faced with the challenge of interpreting its tradition in a way that is both faithful to its core beliefs and relevant to the needs of the contemporary world.
