The Lakers' Coaching Gamble: JJ Redick, the Great Unknown

Former ESPN analyst JJ Redick has emerged as a surprising candidate for the vacant Lakers head coach position, raising questions about the potential risks and rewards of hiring a coach with no prior NBA experience.

The Los Angeles Lakers are in the market for a new head coach, and one name that has consistently been linked to the position is JJ Redick. The former 15-year NBA player and current ESPN analyst has never coached before, which has raised eyebrows among some observers.

However, Redick has a strong basketball mind and has spent the past three years as a broadcaster, providing analysis and commentary on the game. He also co-hosted a podcast with Lakers superstar LeBron James, which has given him a close-up view of the team's dynamics.

Despite these factors, some believe that hiring Redick would be a major gamble. As ESPN analyst Rachel Nichols said on a recent episode of "All Facts No Brakes," "With JJ, when you do make that choice, it is a blind leap."

Nichols pointed out that there is simply no way to know what kind of coach Redick would be, since he has no prior experience. "It is like walking into a pit blindfolded," she said. "Could be clouds of cotton candy. Could be happiness and light, and you're right about every instinct you have. This is the next Steve Kerr, X, Y, Z. It's worked out great. You could jump into that pit, and it's a bunch of piranhas. There's literally no way to know."

Others, however, believe that Redick's lack of experience could be a positive thing. They argue that he will bring a fresh perspective to the Lakers organization and that his analytical mind could help the team improve its performance.

Ultimately, whether or not hiring Redick would be a good move for the Lakers is a question that can only be answered with time. However, it is clear that this is a decision that will be closely watched by the entire basketball world.

In addition to the coaching search, the Lakers are also facing several other challenges this offseason. The team is well over the NBA salary cap, and James has a player option for the 2024-25 season. The Lakers also have the No. 17 pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, but that pick is defered from the New Orleans Pelicans.

The Lakers have been linked to several trade rumors this offseason, with Cleveland Cavaliers star Donovan Mitchell, Atlanta Hawks guards Trae Young and Dejounte Murray, and Pelicans and former Lakers forward Brandon Ingram among the players mentioned.

Nichols believes that the Lakers should focus on acquiring role players rather than a big-name star. "If they can't get the right guy [star player], I think they are much smarter getting better role players than taking a flier on a big name just because he's a big name," she said. "We saw that with the Knicks for years. They did it the wrong way, and now they're doing it the right way; you want to see the Lakers do that, too."

The Lakers are coming off a disappointing season in which they were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by the Denver Nuggets. The team is hoping to make a deep playoff run next season, but they will need to make some significant changes to their roster and coaching staff.
