In an era of climate uncertainty, a new spiritual movement is emerging to address the psychological toll of environmental threats. Eco-chaplains, trained in the intersection of climate, grief, and spirituality, are providing support and solace to those grappling with the emotional weight of the climate crisis.

In a world grappling with the unprecedented challenges of climate change, a novel spiritual movement is taking root, one dedicated to helping individuals navigate the complex emotions that arise from the threat to our planet. Dubbed "eco-chaplains," these spiritual leaders are receiving specialized training to meet the growing need for addressing "grief, anxiety, and burnout" related to environmental issues.

Heralded as a 21st-century invention, eco-chaplaincy has gained traction in various corners of the globe, with an estimated 100 individuals actively practicing in the western world. Multiple organizations have emerged to train individuals in a type of eco-therapy, drawing from diverse perspectives such as Buddhist, Christian, Jewish, and secular philosophies.

The need for eco-chaplains has surged in response to the widespread prevalence of climate anxiety. In 2017, the American Psychological Association (APA) officially recognized the existence of this chronic fear of environmental doom. According to the APA, a staggering two-thirds of Americans have experienced climate anxiety.

Rev. Alison Cornish, a chaplaincy coordinator from Portland, Maine, underscores the increasing demand for eco-chaplains. Her non-profit organization, The BTS Center, specializes in addressing climate change spiritually. In 2023, Cornish witnessed an eight-fold increase in the number of chaplains registering for their climate-related programs.

Eco-chaplains serve diverse populations, including older adults who grapple with the personal losses associated with climate change, such as declining health and the loss of cherished landscapes. Conversely, they also assist young adults who harbor profound fears about inheriting a planet ravaged by wildfires, floods, and other cataclysmic events.

The work of eco-chaplains takes on various forms. One common approach is through facilitated support groups. At monthly Sustaining Climate Activists meetings in Oregon, certified hospital chaplain Rev. Liz Olson leads participants through discussions and meditative exercises designed to alleviate climate anxiety. Participants share their concerns and practice mindfulness techniques to regulate their emotions.

The Sustaining Climate Activists group was founded in response to the election of former President Trump, a catalyst that amplified fears about the future of environmental protections. Co-founder Alan Journet emphasizes the group's role in providing solace and support amidst shared anxieties.

Eco-chaplains are not solely focused on providing emotional support. They also play a crucial role in fostering community and inspiring action. By acknowledging the grief and anxiety associated with climate change, eco-chaplains empower individuals to connect with their emotions and engage in collective efforts to address the root causes of environmental degradation.

As the climate crisis intensifies, the need for eco-chaplains is expected to grow. These spiritual leaders provide a beacon of hope and resilience in a time of environmental uncertainty, helping individuals cope with the emotional toll of climate change and mobilize a collective response to protect the planet for future generations.
