The Steeper Fines in NBA and the Impact on Player Wealth: Draymond Green's Perspective

NBA star Draymond Green, known for accumulating significant fines during his career, voiced concerns about the impact of financial penalties on player retirement wealth.
Draymond Green, the outspoken forward of the Golden State Warriors, has been vocal about the financial consequences of his on-court actions. Green, who has accumulated approximately $900,000 in fines during his NBA career, has lost millions in salary due to suspensions. These punishments, he argues, affect the ability of players to accumulate wealth for retirement.
Green's recent comments highlight the significant financial burden fines and suspensions impose on NBA players. In December 2023, an on-court altercation with Phoenix Suns center Jusuf Nurkic resulted in an indefinite suspension for Green. The suspension, which lasted nearly a month, cost him just under $2 million in wages.
Green expressed his concern that the current financial penalty system may hinder players' ability to accumulate enough wealth for retirement. In an episode of Shaquille O'Neal's "The Big Podcast with Shaq," Green stated, "The fines to me don't make sense. When you talk about as hard as we work to accumulate wealth, coming from situations that most people never make it out, and then you get fined the way we get fined, it's actually not set up for us to be wealthy after we're done playing."
Green also pointed to the tax and fine structure of the NBA as factors that impact player wealth. He noted that while players work hard to earn their salaries, the combination of fines and taxes significantly reduces their earnings. "This job is not set up, the way we're taxed, the way we're fined. ... If I do something wrong, I lose $100,000. It took my mom four years when I was growing up to make $100,000," Green said.
Despite the financial challenges, Green emphasizes the importance of financial planning for NBA players. "We have to be financially literate. We have to be able to invest our money. We have to be able to save our money. We have to be able to take care of our families," he said.
Green's comments also raise questions about the role of the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) in addressing the issue of financial penalties. The NBPA, which represents the interests of NBA players, could potentially negotiate with the league to modify the current fine structure and provide more support for players facing financial challenges.
Draymond Green's concerns about the impact of fines and suspensions on player wealth highlight the need for a comprehensive approach to financial management in the NBA. While the league has implemented measures to address player conduct, it remains essential to ensure that financial penalties do not disproportionately affect players' ability to secure a financially secure retirement.
