The Unprecedented Dominance of the New York Yankees' Rotation

The New York Yankees' starting pitchers have been on a historic stretch, allowing two or fewer runs in 15 consecutive outings, the longest such streak since the mound was moved to its current distance in 1893.
The New York Yankees have established themselves as one of the most formidable teams in baseball, boasting an impressive record and a dynamic duo in Aaron Judge and Juan Soto. However, it is their starting rotation that has defied expectations and emerged as a cornerstone of their success, even in the absence of reigning Cy Young Award winner Gerrit Cole.
The Yankees' starters currently possess the second-lowest ERA in all of baseball at 2.73, trailing only the Philadelphia Phillies by a mere two-thousandths of a run. But it is their recent stretch that has catapulted them into the history books.
Since May 10th, every Yankees starting pitcher has allowed two or fewer runs in five or more innings, an unprecedented streak that spans 15 consecutive outings. This remarkable achievement stands as the longest such streak since the mound was moved to its current distance of 60 feet, 6 inches in 1893.
Before the season began, the Yankees' rotation was seen as a potential weakness, especially with Cole sidelined by an elbow injury. Carlos Rodon struggled in his debut season in New York, Nestor Cortes had a disappointing 2023 campaign, and Luis Gil, Marcus Stroman, and Clarke Schmidt had yet to prove themselves as reliable starters.
However, the rotation has defied all expectations, with only Cortes having an ERA over 3.00 this season. Rookie Luis Gil has emerged as the most dominant pitcher, boasting a 2.11 ERA and an impressive 11.4 strikeouts per nine innings.
Despite their historic run, the Yankees suffered a disappointing loss to the lowly Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday night, dropping their record to 37-19. The defeat was a reminder that even the most dominant teams can experience occasional setbacks.
With Cole expected to return next month, the Yankees face a dilemma as to who, if anyone, will slide into the bullpen. The decision will be a tough one, as each pitcher in the rotation has proven their worth.
The success of the rotation has been a pleasant surprise for the Yankees and has given them a solid foundation to build upon. As they continue their chase for a World Series title, they can count on their starting pitchers to continue their unprecedented dominance.
