Thomas Rhett reveals that his relationship with wife Lauren Akins faced significant challenges during his rise to fame, including adoption, pregnancy, and frequent travel between Uganda and the United States.
Thomas Rhett, the country music superstar, has opened up about a difficult period in his marriage to Lauren Akins during his rise to stardom. In an interview with Us Weekly, Rhett revealed that their relationship nearly "imploded" as they navigated the challenges of adoption, pregnancy, and frequent travel.
In 2017, the couple embarked on the adoption of a child from Africa while also expecting their second child. Per Ugandan law, they were required to foster the child for a year in the country, which involved numerous flights between Uganda and the United States.

"I'd go to Uganda and be husband and dad, and then go to America and be like, 'OK, shows and music.' I was internally imploding, and so was Lauren," Rhett admitted. "We'd both come to these breaking points [feeling like] something has to give. It was not a fun time in our marriage."
Despite the overwhelming challenges, the couple refused to give up on their relationship. Rhett explained that "giving up was not an option" and that they worked together to overcome their difficulties.

"With me being a fixer and Lauren being stubborn, we made it work. The easiest thing to do is quit. But when you don't and you keep grinding it out, you'll inevitably become stronger," he said.
Rhett emphasized that marriage is not always easy and that it requires constant effort and commitment. He and Lauren have been married since they were both 22 and have welcomed four daughters together.

"At 26, it was nerve-racking to portray anything that was less than 'couple goals' on Instagram. Now there's no pressure to pretend we're [something] we're not. We are normal people who deal with the same stuff everybody else deals with," he said.
Rhett encourages other couples to embrace honesty and communication during tough times. "Darkness cannot live where the light is. As for younger artists trying to decide, 'Do I want to get married at 22? What will this do for my career?' If they're your person, marry 'em and own it. Make that person your centerpiece, because that's your rock for the rest of your life," he advised.

Rhett's candid account of marriage and the challenges they faced serves as a reminder that even the seemingly perfect relationships portrayed on social media go through their own struggles. Through perseverance, honesty, and a shared commitment, couples can overcome adversity and emerge stronger on the other side.
