Former Oakland A’s pitcher Trevor May has unleashed a scathing rebuke of team owner John Fisher's public apology letter, accusing him of insincerity and disrespect in his handling of the team's relocation to Las Vegas.

Fisher penned an apology letter ahead of the team's final home series at the Coliseum before the franchise's planned move to Las Vegas, acknowledging the "failed" goal of keeping the A’s in Oakland.

May, who pitched for the A's from 2015 to 2020, took issue with the letter's tone and perceived lack of accountability.

"With all due respect, which is more than you likely deserve, save it," May wrote in his own letter directed to Fisher on X. "Be an adult. Get in front of a camera and say it with your chest. Releasing a letter, clearly written by someone else, and including a bunch of names you DEFINITELY do not know, is just disrespectful to those that love the team."

May argued that Fisher's repeated assertion that "we tried" to keep the team in Oakland was disingenuous.

"‘We tried.’ lol," May wrote. "The fact that you STILL think that anyone cares about that at this point shows, once again, your lack of understanding of WHY people love the game. You love owning stuff, just not your actions. Either stand up with pride or keep hiding. Pick one, we're tired."

Fisher, in his letter, cited several Oakland legends and storied moments, emphasizing his attempts to keep the team in Oakland. He also expressed regret for not being able to secure a new stadium deal in the Bay Area.

However, May's letter suggests that many former players and fans do not believe Fisher's efforts were genuine.

"I can tell you this from the heart: the people of Oakland deserve better," May wrote. "They don't deserve empty words and hollow promises. They deserve a team that is proud to represent their city and a stadium that they can be proud of. You've failed them on both counts."

The A’s have played in Oakland since 1968. But next season they’ll move to Sacramento for at least the next three years, where they’ll play until their scheduled move to Las Vegas for the 2028 season.

The A’s time at the Coliseum will officially come to an end on Thursday in the club’s final game against the Rangers.

May's letter reflects the deep disappointment and frustration felt by many A's fans over the team's relocation. It remains to be seen whether Fisher will respond to May's criticism or if he will offer a more substantive apology to the Oakland community.
