Cameras captured Uruguay players, led by Darwin Núñez, storming into the stands and exchanging blows with Colombian supporters. Security personnel at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina, struggled to contain the situation as the brawl intensified.

Videos of the incident show Núñez throwing several punches, while Giménez also connected with a blow. Colombian fans retaliated, throwing punches and objects towards the Uruguay players.

The chaos subsided after several minutes, but the aftermath was filled with accusations and justifications. Giménez claimed that the Uruguay players had to intervene to protect their families.

"Please be careful because the families are in the stands. They stormed all our families, a certain sector of Colombia fans and they won’t let us speak on the microphone," Giménez said in an interview with Fox Sports. "I’m going to say it now because I know I can. Because if not, they’ll cut you off."

"This is a disaster. Our families are in danger. We had to get on the top of the stands as soon as possible to rescue our loved ones with newborn babies. It was a disaster."

Giménez's assertion that Uruguay players were acting in defense of their families was supported by Uruguay Football Association President Ignacio Alonso.

"Uruguay’s players had an instinctive reaction, which is natural, which is going to defend and protect the children who were on that side of the stands, who were suffering attacks, the women, the parents, the closest family members, siblings," Alonso said.

CONMEBOL, the South American governing body of Copa América, condemned the violence in a statement.

"Our work is based on the conviction that soccer connects and unites us through its positive values. There is no place for intolerance and violence on and off the field," the statement read.

Prior to the brawl, tensions had been running high between the two teams. Colombia's Daniel Muñoz was sent off after receiving two yellow cards, leaving his team down a man for the entire second half.

At the end of the match, players and staff from both sides engaged in a shoving match on the pitch before order was restored.

Emotions often run high in sporting events, but the violence that unfolded at Bank of America Stadium is unacceptable. CONMEBOL will hope that the Copa América final between Colombia and Argentina on Sunday does not witness similar reckless behavior.
