TJ Hockenson's Road to Recovery: Vikings Tight End Begins Camp on PUP List

Vikings tight end TJ Hockenson has been placed on the physically unable to perform list as he continues to rehab from a torn ACL and MCL in his right knee. Hockenson is expected to miss the season opener but is ahead of schedule in his recovery.

Minnesota Vikings tight end TJ Hockenson reported to training camp on Sunday and was placed on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list as expected, as he continues to recover from a torn ACL and MCL in his right knee. Hockenson was among the 38 players, including mostly rookies, quarterbacks, and players rehabilitating injuries, who reported on Sunday. The rest of the roster is due on Tuesday with the first practice of camp set for Wednesday.

Coach Kevin O'Connell remained optimistic about Hockenson's recovery, noting that the tight end missed only a few days of the offseason training program to visit his surgeon in Los Angeles. Hockenson's recovery has been on track, with him exceeding some of the benchmarks set throughout his rehab process. While he is likely to miss the season opener on September 8th, Hockenson is expected to return to the lineup later in the season.

Hockenson underwent ACL reconstruction surgery on January 29th after waiting for his damaged MCL to heal fully. This delayed his recovery timeline but should improve his overall outlook for the season. O'Connell emphasized the importance of ensuring Hockenson's recovery is done correctly, highlighting his significance to the team's future.

Hockenson, a two-time Pro Bowl selection, recorded a career-high 960 receiving yards in 15 games last season. He suffered the injury in the December 24th game against the Detroit Lions, ending his season prematurely.

In addition to Hockenson, cornerback NaJee Thompson (knee) and running back DeWayne McBride will also be sidelined for the start of camp. McBride has been designated with a non-football injury, with the Vikings not disclosing the nature of his condition.

The Vikings are cautiously optimistic about Hockenson's recovery and are confident that he will return to his Pro Bowl form once fully healthy. His presence on the field will be a significant boost to the offense, providing quarterback Kirk Cousins with a reliable target in the passing game.

As the team progresses through training camp, Hockenson's progress will be closely monitored, and he will gradually increase his activity level. The Vikings will take a cautious approach with their star tight end, ensuring he is fully ready before returning to game action.
