Despite his unwavering support for the USO, country music icon Toby Keith prioritized his daughter's safety above all, denying her requests to accompany him on dangerous tours in active war zones.
Toby Keith's patriotism extended beyond his music, manifesting itself in his unwavering support for the United Service Organizations (USO). The country music legend embarked on 18 USO tours throughout his career, performing for over 250,000 service members stationed across the globe. However, when it came to his daughter, Krystal Keith, Toby's paternal instincts took precedence over his sense of duty.
Despite Krystal's entreaties to join her father on his USO tours, Toby adamantly refused, citing the inherent dangers of performing in active war zones. "I begged to go, but it was such a dangerous thing," Krystal recalled. "He went into, like, dad mode. He was like, 'No, no, this is really important work I'm going to do, and no, my daughter is not – It's not something where … I'm going to put you in danger so you can go experience this.'"

Toby's refusal stemmed from his firsthand experience with the hazards of USO tours. He had encountered mortar fire on multiple occasions, including an incident in Kandahar, Afghanistan, where he and approximately 2,500 service members had to seek refuge in a concrete bunker. "I mean, his helicopters had been shot at," Krystal said. "He had been in the middle of shows when mortar fire came down."
Krystal understood her father's protective instincts, acknowledging that his primary concern was her safety. "He still, as much as it meant to him, and he knew how important it was for him, he was still like, ‘Hard pass on my daughter going to Afghanistan right now,’ because he had been shot. I mean, his helicopters had been shot at. He had been in the middle of shows when mortar fire came down."

Instead of engaging in USO tours, Krystal carved her own path in the music industry, opening for her father on numerous tours since the age of 14. Toby encouraged her to forge her own path, offering advice sparingly and respecting her artistic vision. "He never said, 'Don't do this or don't do that,'" Krystal remembered. "And he really let me carve my own path and … he rarely was like, 'Hey, I've got this idea for you.' He just always let me come to my own ideas and lead things the way I wanted to lead them."
Krystal's performance in the television special, "Toby Keith: American Idol" – a tribute to her late father who died Feb. 5 after a lengthy battle with cancer – was a bittersweet experience. "It was very bittersweet," she said. "It was just super nerve-wracking because it was the first time I had been back on stage since having my youngest daughter. I took off time with her and then Covid hit, and then my dad got sick, so I haven't been back on the road since '20; the end of 2018 was when my last single came out."

Despite the pressure she felt, Krystal believed her father would have been proud of her performance. "I took off time with her and then Covid hit, and then my dad got sick, so I haven't been back on the road since '20; the end of 2018 was when my last single came out. I didn’t choose the song; they asked me to do it, and I really struggled with whether or not I would be able to get through it. I was like, if I can get through it without crying, if I can get all the words right, then I will be proud of myself and that's all I need."
