NFL legend Tom Brady has expressed his concerns about the declining state of football, asserting that the game has become "dumbed down" and that rookies are being thrown into the fire prematurely.

Former NFL quarterback and future Fox Sports analyst Tom Brady has launched a scathing critique of the current state of football, accusing the game of becoming "dumbed down" and questioning the early playing time given to rookies.

During an appearance at Fanatics Fest alongside Stephen A. Smith, Brady expressed his dismay at the evolution of college and NFL football, claiming that the game has lost its educational value and that young players are being forced to play before they are fully prepared.

"There used to be college programs," Brady stated. "Now, there are college teams. You’re no longer learning a program; you’re learning a playbook."

Recalling his own collegiate experience at Michigan, Brady emphasized the importance of developing a strong foundation and progressing through the depth chart before being thrust into the spotlight.

"I had to learn all those things in college. That was development. Then, I went to New England, and I was developed by Coach Belichick and the offensive staff there," he said.

However, Brady believes that the current trend of starting rookies immediately is detrimental to their development.

"I think it’s just a tragedy that we’re forcing these [NFL] rookies to play early," he asserted.

Brady attributed this trend to the "dumbing down" of the game, which has allowed underprepared players to compete at the professional level.

"The reality is the only reason why [rookies] are [playing right away] is because we dumbed the game down, which has allowed them to play," he explained. "It used to be thought of at a higher level."

The Hall of Fame quarterback lamented the loss of in-depth coaching and offseason preparation, arguing that players are no longer being taught the intricacies of the game.

"But I think what happens is it discourages the coaches from going to deep levels because they realize the players don’t have the opportunity to go to a deep level. So, they’re going to teach them where they’re at," he said.

Brady's comments come amid a period of significant change in college football, with NIL deals and the transfer portal allowing players to move between schools with greater ease. This has led to concerns about the stability of college programs and the potential for underdeveloped players to enter the NFL.

Brady's criticism of early playing time for rookies aligns with the concerns of some NFL coaches and analysts, who believe that it can stunt the development of young players and increase the risk of injury.

As Brady prepares to enter his new role as a Fox Sports analyst, his candid assessment of the current state of football provides a glimpse into his sharp football mind and his passion for the game. NFL fans can expect him to offer his unique insights and opinions on the league's most pressing issues when he joins the broadcast booth alongside Kevin Burkhardt this season.
