Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., once considered a 2024 presidential candidate, is now reportedly high on Trump's list of potential running mates, having supported the former president early on.
In the wake of a report suggesting that Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas may be moving up on Donald Trump's list of potential running mates, attention has been drawn to the senator's past presidential aspirations.
Cotton, an Army veteran who rose to prominence in Republican politics after serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, had seriously considered a 2024 White House run before ultimately deciding against it in late 2022.
After winning re-election by a landslide in Arkansas in 2020, Cotton spent much of 2021 and 2022 campaigning for fellow Republicans in the midterm elections. He visited Iowa and New Hampshire, states that have traditionally kicked off the GOP's presidential nominating process.
Cotton also expanded his fundraising operation, bolstered his political profile, and released a book on military history.
However, days before the 2022 midterms, Cotton announced that he would not run for the White House in 2024. He attributed his decision to his family, particularly his young sons.
"My boys are age 7 and 5. They’re old enough to know that dad’s gone and be sad about it, but not old enough to understand the purpose and why it all matters and why the sacrifice is worth it," Cotton said at the time.
Cotton emphasized that while Republican voters could find another presidential candidate, his sons could not find another father. He added that he wanted to witness his sons' milestones, such as learning to hit a fastball and read.
Despite his decision, Cotton left open the possibility of a future White House run, stating that he would consider serving in a Republican administration if asked.
Fast forward to nearly two years later, Cotton has confirmed having conversations with Trump about winning the 2024 election. However, he has denied being contacted by the Trump campaign regarding the vice presidency.
"I suspect only Donald Trump knows who's really on his short list," Cotton said in an interview with Fox News.
Cotton's potential selection as Trump's running mate would be a strategic move, given his strong military background, conservative credentials, and appeal to Republican voters, particularly those who prioritize national security and border security.
