Germany's Toni Kroos has officially called time on his illustrious soccer career following his team's heartbreaking loss to Spain in the quarterfinals of Euro 2024. Mikel Merino's last-minute extra-time winner sent Spain through to the semifinals, ending Kroos's 17-year professional journey.
Two days after Germany's disappointing exit from Euro 2024, Toni Kroos has announced his retirement from international soccer. The loss to Spain marked the 114th and final appearance for the 34-year-old midfielder, who bowed out with a heartfelt farewell message on Instagram.
In his emotional post, Kroos expressed his gratitude to everyone who had supported him throughout his career. "Before I take a break and at least try to realize what happened over the last 17 years, I don't want to miss the opportunity to say thank you to everyone accepting me how and who I am," he wrote.
Kroos thanked his fans, clubs, coaches, and teammates, as well as his friends and family. He also sent an apology to Spain youngster Pedri, who suffered a knee injury in a collision with Kroos during the quarterfinal match. Pedri will miss the remainder of the tournament.
The 2014 World Cup winner's retirement brings an end to an extraordinary career that saw him win numerous titles, primarily with Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. He boasts an impressive collection of six Champions Leagues, four Spanish leagues, three Bundesligas, three German Cups, and one Copa del Rey.
Kroos announced his decision to retire at the end of Euro 2024 in May, and his final match for Germany turned out to be a bittersweet affair. Despite his team's elimination, Kroos received a standing ovation from the home crowd in Munich.
In his retirement statement, Kroos expressed his love for the game and thanked football for the incredible memories he had accumulated. "Last but not least: Thank you Football! You beautiful game. And… you're welcome! Over and out," he concluded.
Pedri, who is expected to stay with the Spain squad for the remainder of the tournament, responded to Kroos's apology with heartfelt words of his own. "Thank you Toni Kroos for your message. This is soccer and these things happen. Your career and your record remain forever," he wrote on social media.
