A confirmed tornado tore through Rome, New York, on Tuesday, causing widespread damage to homes, businesses, and infrastructure.

Rome, New York - A confirmed tornado swept through the city of Rome, Oneida County, on Tuesday afternoon, leaving a path of destruction in its wake. The National Weather Service (NWS) confirmed that an EF2 tornado, with winds estimated at 111-135 mph, touched down at 4:45 pm and traveled approximately 2.5 miles before lifting near Westernville.

The tornado's destructive force was evident throughout the city, with numerous homes and businesses sustaining significant damage. Roofs were torn off, windows were shattered, and walls collapsed. Power lines were downed, leaving thousands of residents without electricity. Emergency crews worked tirelessly throughout the night to clear debris and restore essential services.

One of the hardest-hit areas was the Greensburg neighborhood, where several homes were completely destroyed. Residents described the tornado as a deafening roar that ripped through their homes within seconds.

"It was like a freight train. It just came out of nowhere," said one resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity. "My whole house shook, and then the roof just disappeared."

The Rome Free Academy, a local high school, also sustained significant damage, with the roof partially collapsed and windows blown out. Students and staff were evacuated safely, but the building will remain closed until further notice.

Mayor Jacqueline Izzo declared a state of emergency for the city and activated the Emergency Operations Center. She urged residents to remain indoors and avoid affected areas while emergency crews assess the damage and respond to the needs of those impacted.

The NWS issued a tornado warning for Rome at 4:42 pm, but many residents said they received little or no notice before the tornado struck. The NWS has since acknowledged the need for improved warning systems and is working to address the issue.

Governor Kathy Hochul expressed her condolences to the residents of Rome and pledged state resources to assist with the recovery effort.

"My heart goes out to the people of Rome who have been affected by this devastating tornado," Hochul said in a statement. "We will do everything in our power to help them rebuild and recover from this tragedy."

The Red Cross has opened shelters for displaced residents, and donations are being accepted to assist with relief efforts. The Rome community is rallying together to support those who have been impacted, offering assistance with cleanup, housing, and other necessities.

As the cleanup efforts continue, the full extent of the damage caused by the tornado is still being assessed. Insurance adjusters are on the ground, and FEMA is expected to declare a disaster area to provide additional federal assistance.
