A severe rainstorm at Cambodia's revered Angkor temple complex has resulted in a tragic incident, leaving one person deceased and three others injured, including one in critical condition. A fallen tree crushed a tuk-tuk, causing the casualties and damaging several ancient statues.

One person has tragically lost their life, and three others have sustained injuries, one critically, in a harrowing incident at Cambodia's celebrated Angkor temple complex. A colossal tree was uprooted and crashed onto a tuk-tuk during a raging rainstorm, causing the fatalities and further damage to the historical site.

The heart-wrenching event unfolded late Tuesday afternoon at the southern gate to Angkor Thom, situated adjacent to the renowned Angkor Wat temple. Both shrines are integral to the extensive archaeological complex in the northwestern province of Siem Reap, approximately 200 miles northwest of the capital, Phnom Penh. Notably, Angkor is Cambodia's prime tourist attraction, drawing over half a million international visitors during the first half of 2024, as per the Cambodia Tourism Ministry.

According to a Wednesday statement released by the Siem Reap Provincial Administration, the fallen tree struck a tuk-tuk, a common motorized three-wheeled vehicle prevalent in Southeast Asia. The impact proved fatal for the driver, killing them instantly. The three passengers in the vehicle were injured, with one sustaining critical injuries.

In addition to the human tragedy, several statues adorning the balustrade of Tonle Oum Gate, where the incident occurred, were also damaged by the fallen tree. The Siem Reap Provincial Administration released a statement acknowledging the incident and expressing condolences to the victim's family.

The Apsara National Authority, the government agency responsible for managing the archaeological park, promptly shared photographs of the fallen tree via its official Facebook page late Tuesday. The authority announced that the tree had been removed, and the entrance was once again accessible for visitors.

Covering an area of approximately 155 square miles, the Angkor site boasts the ruins of various Cambodian empires' capitals, spanning the 9th to 15th centuries. Scholars widely consider it one of Southeast Asia's most significant archaeological sites.

The incident serves as a grim reminder of the potential risks associated with unpredictable weather conditions, particularly in areas with ancient structures and abundant tourist activity. Authorities are investigating the incident to determine the exact cause of the tree fall and implement preventive measures to minimize future risks.
