Two backcountry skiers lost their lives in a tragic avalanche that struck the mountains outside Salt Lake City. Search crews worked tirelessly to locate the skiers, and their bodies were ultimately recovered.
Salt Lake City, UT - A devastating avalanche on the slopes of the Wasatch Mountains has claimed the lives of two backcountry skiers. The skiers, identified as 28-year-old Michael Wareing and 29-year-old Spencer Sutherland, were reported missing after they were caught in the avalanche on Tuesday.
Search and rescue teams launched a massive operation, using dogs and helicopters to search for the missing skiers. After more than 24 hours of searching, their bodies were located late Wednesday afternoon.
"This is a tragic loss for the families and friends of these young men," said Sergeant Mark Marshall of the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office. "Our hearts go out to them during this difficult time."
The avalanche occurred at approximately 11:30 AM on Tuesday in an area known as Big Cottonwood Canyon. Witnesses reported seeing a large slide that swept away the skiers.
The skiers were experienced backcountry skiers and were equipped with the proper safety gear. However, the avalanche was too powerful and too fast to withstand.
"Avalanches are an inherent risk in backcountry skiing," said Mark Jones, a spokesperson for the Utah Avalanche Forecast Center. "Even with the proper equipment and experience, it is impossible to completely eliminate the risk."
The Utah Avalanche Forecast Center had issued a high avalanche risk warning for the area at the time of the incident. However, the skiers decided to go ahead with their planned trip.
"We understand that people want to enjoy the backcountry, but it is important to be aware of the risks and make informed decisions," said Jones. "We urge everyone to check the avalanche forecast before heading out and to take appropriate precautions."
The deaths of Wareing and Sutherland mark the first avalanche-related fatalities in Utah this season. Last year, there were four avalanche deaths in the state.
The Utah Avalanche Forecast Center provides daily avalanche forecasts for the state. The forecasts are based on a number of factors, including snowpack conditions, weather, and wind.
Skiers and snowboarders are encouraged to check the forecast before heading out into the backcountry. They should also be equipped with the proper safety gear, including a beacon, shovel, and probe.
Avalanches can occur at any time, even on slopes that appear to be safe. It is important to be aware of the risks and to take precautions to avoid becoming a victim.
