Attorney General Josh Kaul confirmed that a male student had a weapon outside the school and that responding officers used deadly force on him. The student was not able to gain entry into the school, Kaul added.

The identity of the student and the circumstances leading to the shooting are still under investigation.

The Mt. Horeb Area School District announced the lockdown on social media shortly after 11 a.m. and urged family members to stay away from the schools.

An initial search of the middle school did not yield additional suspects, and there were no reports of injuries to anyone inside the building.

The district later confirmed that the threat had been "neutralized outside of the building."

Details of the incident have not been fully released, but the district announced that school would be canceled on Thursday to allow for the healing process to begin.

The Mt. Horeb Police Department did not immediately respond to requests for further information.

Mt. Horeb is located about 25 miles west of the state capital of Madison.

According to preliminary reports from law enforcement, the student was armed with a handgun and was attempting to enter the school when he was confronted by police. Officers ordered him to drop his weapon, but he did not comply and they fired shots.
