A pharmaceutical plant in southern India has become the site of a tragic incident, as a massive explosion has left 18 workers dead and dozens more injured. The blast occurred at the Escientia Advanced Sciences Private Ltd. facility in the Anakapalle district of Andhra Pradesh state, causing a raging fire that engulfed the plant.

The death toll has risen steadily since the incident, with initial reports of 15 fatalities later increasing to 18. Distressing scenes have emerged from the aftermath of the explosion, with reports of workers sustaining horrifying injuries, including peeling skin. Ambulances were seen transporting the victims to hospitals, adding to the grim atmosphere.

Authorities suspect that an electrical fault may have sparked the inferno, triggering the explosion and fire. A thorough investigation has been ordered by state officials to determine the exact cause of the tragedy.

The plant is located in Andhra Pradesh's special economic zone at Atchutapuram village. Established in 2009, the zone houses over 200 companies and is situated adjacent to the port city of Vishakhapatnam, a highly industrialized area known for its hazardous chemical leakages and other mishaps.

In one of the most severe industrial accidents in the region, a blast at the Hindustan Petroleum Corporation refinery in Visakhapatnam in 1997 claimed the lives of 22 individuals.

The Escientia plant manufactures intermediate chemicals and active pharmaceutical ingredients, and employs around 380 workers who work in two shifts. Many managed to escape the inferno as they were on their lunch break at the time of the explosion.

Fires and industrial accidents are not uncommon in India, where building laws and safety regulations are often ignored or violated. Many facilities, including factories, lack proper firefighting equipment, exacerbating the risks.

In 2019, a fire broke out at a New Delhi factory producing handbags and other items, killing 43 people due to an electrical short circuit.

The pharmaceutical plant explosion in Anakapalle district underscores the need for stringent safety measures and adherence to building codes in industrial facilities to prevent such tragedies from recurring.
