Rice University in Houston, Texas, was rocked by an apparent murder-suicide on Monday, August 28, 2024, the first day of classes for the fall semester. A female student was found dead in her dorm room during a welfare check by university police, while a man, who was not a student at the university, was also found deceased in the room with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Rice University Dean of Undergraduates Bridget Gorman identified the deceased student as Andrea Rodriguez Avila, a junior from Maryland. She noted that there was no sign of forced entry into Avila's room and that the campus remained safe.

Police Chief Clemente Rodriguez confirmed that the male suspect, whose identity has not been released, was in a dating relationship with Avila and that a note, apparently written by the suspect, was found at the scene. The note reportedly contained details about their troubled relationship, suggesting that it may have played a role in the incident.
Rodriguez said that police believe the suspect gained access to the dorm through Avila, who had not attended any of her classes that day. When her family expressed concern after not hearing from her, university police were dispatched to her dorm room around 4 p.m. local time, where they made the tragic discovery.

The university has a small student body of approximately 8,500 students, with annual tuition fees of around $60,000.
