Florida Man Kills Eight Farmworkers in DUI Crash, Blames Drugs
A Florida man, Bryan Maclean Howard, has been arrested and charged with eight counts of DUI manslaughter after a deadly crash involving a bus carrying Mexican farmworkers. The incident occurred in Marion County, and Howard has pleaded not guilty and is being held without bond.
According to an arrest report, troopers investigating the crash noticed Howard's bloodshot and watery eyes and slurred speech. When questioned, Howard admitted to consuming marijuana oil and taking anti-seizure and high blood pressure medications the previous night. He also revealed that he had woken up a few hours later and was driving to a methadone clinic at the time of the collision.
Howard's driving record includes several crashes and traffic tickets dating back to 2006. His license has been suspended at least three times, most recently in 2021 for receiving too many citations within a year. Additionally, Howard has a criminal record that includes a conviction for grand theft in 2013 and a probation revocation in 2014 for testing positive for cocaine.
The crash occurred when Howard's pickup truck sideswiped the bus, causing it to careen off the road and overturn. Eight Mexican farmworkers, who were on H-2A visas, lost their lives in the tragedy. Dozens more sustained injuries and remain hospitalized.
The six victims who have been identified so far are:
* Evarado Ventura Hernández, 30
* Cristian Salazar Villeda, 24
* Alfredo Tovar Sánchez, 20
* Isaías Miranda Pascal, 21
* José Heriberto Fraga Acosta, 27
* Manuel Pérez Ríos, 46
Howard's reckless actions have caused immense grief and loss to the victims' families and the community. The investigation into the crash is ongoing, and it is expected that more charges may be filed.
The tragic incident has highlighted the dangers of driving under the influence and the need for stronger enforcement of traffic laws. It also raises concerns about the safety of migrant workers, who often face hazardous conditions and exploitation.
The authorities are working to provide support to the injured victims and the families of those who lost their lives. The community has also rallied together to offer assistance and condolences.
As the legal proceedings unfold, it is essential to ensure that justice is served and that measures are taken to prevent such tragedies from happening in the future.
