The suspect, Bryan Maclean Howard, 41, reportedly confessed to smoking marijuana oil and taking prescription drugs the night before the tragic accident.

According to an arrest report, troopers investigating the crash noticed Howard's bloodshot and watery eyes and slurred speech. When questioned, Howard admitted to consuming marijuana oil and taking anti-seizure and high blood pressure medications the previous night. He also revealed that he had woken up a few hours later and was driving to a methadone clinic at the time of the collision.

Howard's driving record includes several crashes and traffic tickets dating back to 2006. His license has been suspended at least three times, most recently in 2021 for receiving too many citations within a year. Additionally, Howard has a criminal record that includes a conviction for grand theft in 2013 and a probation revocation in 2014 for testing positive for cocaine.

The crash occurred when Howard's pickup truck sideswiped the bus, causing it to careen off the road and overturn. Eight Mexican farmworkers, who were on H-2A visas, lost their lives in the tragedy. Dozens more sustained injuries and remain hospitalized.
