In two separate incidents off the Italian coast, dozens of migrants have gone missing at sea, while 10 bodies were discovered trapped below the deck of a boat. Rescuers continue to search for survivors.
A tragic shipwreck in the Mediterranean Sea on Monday left 64 people missing at sea, while 11 were rescued and taken ashore to a Calabrian town, according to United Nations' agencies.
The incident occurred about 125 miles off Calabria, Italy, when a boat that had set off from Turkey eight days earlier caught fire and overturned. Survivors reported that the boat had been carrying migrants from Iran, Syria, and Iraq.

A French boat issued a Mayday call, triggering a search-and-rescue operation involving the Italian Coast Guard, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency Frontex, and two merchant vessels in the area.
The 11 rescued migrants were brought to the Calabrian port of Roccella Jonica, where they received medical care. Sadly, one of the migrants died soon after being rescued.

In a separate incident, rescue workers from the German aid group Resqship found 10 bodies of suspected migrants trapped below the deck of a wooden boat off Italy's tiny Lampedusa island.
The Resqship boat, the Nadir, found 61 people on the wooden boat, which was full of water. Crew members were able to evacuate 51 people, two of whom were unconscious.
The discovery of the 10 bodies in the flooded lower deck of the boat is a tragic reminder of the perilous journeys that migrants undertake in their quest for a better life.
Rescue operations continue in the Mediterranean Sea as authorities search for the 64 missing migrants from the shipwreck off Calabria.
The Italian Coast Guard and Frontex vessels are conducting a surface and airborne search in the area where the incident occurred.
The United Nations' agencies expressed their concern over the high number of migrants attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea, and called for increased efforts to protect their lives.
