Davidson, who finished third in qualifying behind Amelie Zalsman and Pimpisa Sisutham at Bradenton Country Club in Florida, will serve as the first alternate for the major tournament. Her participation has sparked controversy and criticism, with LPGA golfer Dana Fall and others expressing concerns.

Fall responded to a post from the Independent Council on Women's Sports, writing, "I'm not sure what the The U.S. WOMENS Open is anymore because I don't understand what a women (sic) is anymore." She tagged the United States Golf Association (USGA) and its CEO Michael Whan in her post.

Carilyn Johnson, who competed on the U.S. National 24 Hour running team, also criticized the USGA for its stance, tweeting, "@USGA saying 'If men can't win in the male category, we support them playing in the women's category where they have a better shot, because men should never have to accept defeat. Ever.'"

The USGA has not yet provided a comment on the controversy. However, the organization has established a gender policy for transgender golfers, which includes the following requirements:

The player must declare that their gender identity is female, a declaration that cannot be changed for sporting purposes for a minimum of four years.

The player must have undergone gender reassignment surgery (i.e., a gonadectomy) prior to the entry deadline for the specific championship.

The player must have undergone hormonal therapy and maintained testosterone levels appropriate for the assigned sex in a verifiable manner and for a sufficient length of time to minimize gender-related advantages in sport competitions, as determined by the USGA in consultation with its medical consultant(s).

Davidson, who previously competed on the NXXT Women's Pro Tour, stopped competing after the organization updated its gender policy.

The 2024 U.S. Women's Open will be played at the Lancaster Country Club in Pennsylvania.

The controversy surrounding Davidson's qualification for the U.S. Women's Open highlights the ongoing debate over transgender participation in women's sports. Proponents of transgender inclusion argue that transgender individuals should be allowed to compete in the gender category that aligns with their identity, while opponents express concerns about potential advantages in physical strength and athleticism.

The USGA's gender policy is designed to address these concerns by ensuring that transgender athletes meet certain criteria before being eligible to compete in women's events. However, the policy has not silenced the debate, and the controversy surrounding Davidson's qualification is likely to continue in the lead-up to the U.S. Women's Open.
