Former President Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson appear to be aligning against Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene's push to defund the special counsel's investigation into Trump.
Former President Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson are seemingly aligning on a shared front against Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene's (R-Ga.) efforts to defund the special counsel's investigation into the former president.
Greene, an ardent supporter of Trump, has taken to social media to share a document allegedly from the former president, which appears to show his support for her demands for Johnson to defund the investigation led by Special Counsel Jack Smith.
The document, shared on Greene's X post, features an image of a news article citing comments from Johnson suggesting that the House was considering ways to defund Smith's probe. Beneath the article, Trump's alleged handwriting reads "Great!" followed by his signature.
Greene's office confirmed to Fox News Digital that the message was sent to her by Trump. In her post, Greene expressed her gratitude for Trump's support, vowing to fight for his agenda.
Meanwhile, Johnson has also indicated a potential openness to the idea of defunding Smith's office. During a press conference, he stated that there were discussions ongoing on the most effective ways to ensure that special counsels do not abuse their authority.
However, Johnson downplayed the role of Greene and her allies in this effort, stressing that these discussions had been taking place for an extended period. He added that any proposal to defund Smith's probe would likely face a challenge in the Democrat-controlled Senate.
Despite Greene's attempts to force a House-wide vote on Johnson's ouster, the push appears to have fallen flat among the Republican conference. Even some of Johnson's critics in the ultra-conservative House Freedom Caucus have expressed hesitation towards another chaotic leadership change.
Trump himself has stated his support for Johnson both publicly and privately, citing Johnson's difficult position within the House. He has also highlighted the upcoming November elections as a factor in his stance.
Rep. Dan Meuser (R-Pa.), a Trump ally, confirmed that he had spoken to the former president recently and that Trump was supportive of Johnson's leadership.
In response to Greene's push, Johnson's office declined to comment. Amidst the ongoing divide, it remains unclear whether Greene and her allies will ultimately succeed in their efforts to defund the special counsel's investigation or force a leadership change within the House.
