Former President Trump is hoping to end the GOP's losing streak in New York state, where a Republican nominee hasn't carried the state since Ronald Reagan in 1984. Former President Donald Trump is setting his sights on New York state, where a Republican nominee hasn't carried the state since Ronald Reagan in 1984. Trump is hoping to break the GOP's losing streak and is planning to campaign in the Bronx, one of the bluest parts of a blue state.
Trump's campaign believes he can make a dent in Biden's support among Black and Hispanic voters, especially younger males who may be frustrated with economic conditions – especially inflation – and who are attracted to Trump's bravado.
"The strategy is to demonstrate to the voters of the Bronx and New York that this isn’t your typical presidential election, that Donald Trump is here to represent everybody and get our country back on track," Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.) told Fox News.
Donalds, a potential Trump running mate who grew up in New York City, will join the former president at the Bronx gathering.
Trump's visit to New York comes amid a broader effort by the former president to boost his 2024 campaign. Trump has been holding rallies and events around the country, and has recently endorsed several Republican candidates.
Some Republicans believe that Trump's focus on New York could help the party make gains in the upcoming midterm elections.
"If Trump can win New York, it will be a huge victory for the GOP," said one Republican strategist. "It will show that Trump is still a force to be reckoned with, and that the GOP can win in blue states."
However, other Republicans are more cautious, noting that New York is a heavily Democratic state and that Trump is a polarizing figure.
"Trump is taking a big risk by campaigning in New York," said another Republican strategist. "If he doesn't win, it will be a major blow to his campaign."
Despite the risks, Trump is confident that he can win New York.
"We're coming to the Bronx," he said on social media on the eve of his Wednesday campaign event. "We're going to win New York."
Time will tell if Trump's strategy is successful. But one thing is for sure: his decision to campaign in the Bronx is a sign that he is serious about winning back New York state.
