Former President Trump needs to repeat his successful 2016 strategy by reaching out to suburban women in swing states, according to a former New York Times journalist.

Former President Trump faces an uphill battle in the 2024 election, and one of his key challenges will be appealing to suburban women in swing states. According to a former New York Times journalist, Trump needs to replicate the strategy he used successfully in 2016 by reaching out to this important demographic.

Todd S. Purdum, the former Los Angeles bureau chief of The New York Times, published a guest essay in the Times on Thursday advising Trump to be more direct in interviews so that voters can get to know him and his plans.

"Writing about politicians for decades has convinced me that direct, succinct answers and explanations from Trump would go a long way — perhaps longer than he realizes — toward persuading voters that they know enough about him and his plans," Purdum wrote.

Purdum brought up several of Trump's recent appearances, during which he said Trump has been taking too long to get to his point with his responses. He criticized Trump's strategy, warning that because of it, he risks losing ground to potential Democratic candidates.

"But in a campaign in which other candidates may fill our days with well-reasoned plans and coherent arguments, Trump can't afford to stick only to rehearsed answers and stump speeches that might not persuade voters or shape what America is talking about," Purdum wrote.

Purdum acknowledged that "there may be times when Trump's best strategy is to stay out of the other candidates' way," but noted that even with his recent outbursts, he's sucking up all the media oxygen.

"The best evidence suggests that millions of Americans still have questions for him and want to see him fighting for the job, continuing to define himself and his priorities, and not ceding precious oxygen to other candidates' distractions," Purdum wrote, adding that "he should" take more questions.

Since Trump announced his candidacy last month, he has combined for only 14 interviews, according to a Fox News Digital review, compared to 55 by potential Democratic front-runner and former Vice President Joe Biden in the same time period.

Purdum encouraged Trump to lean into the fact that he's changed his policy positions.

"I'm not sure he should be so worried," Purdum said. "He's had nearly four years in office in which his theoretical thinking — on topics from trade, to immigration, to 'America First' — has evolved in practice. One person's flip-flop is another's proof of a statesman's maturation. Why not own it?"

Fox News Digital reached out to the Trump campaign for comment, but did not immediately hear back.
