The topic of transgender athletes in women's sports has been a hotly debated issue in American politics, with 24 states currently having laws barring transgender women and girls from competing in certain competitions. Trump's pledge to ban transgender athletes is in line with the views of many conservatives who argue that transgender women have an unfair advantage over biological women due to their physical characteristics.

In April, the Biden administration made major changes to Title IX, the federal law that prohibits discrimination based on sex in educational institutions, but did not include any policy that would prevent schools from enacting outright bans on transgender athletes. This omission has been met with criticism from both Democrats and Republicans, with some arguing that it leaves transgender athletes vulnerable to discrimination.
Nassau County, New York, Executive Bruce Blakeman recently enacted a county law banning biological males from competing in women's sporting events at county-run parks and facilities. The law was immediately met with a lawsuit from New York Attorney General Letitia James, who argues that it violates the Equal Protection Clause of the U.S. Constitution.

Former NCAA Division 1 swimmer Riley Gaines, who competed against transgender swimmer Lia Thomas in the 2022 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships, spoke out against the Biden administration's stance on transgender athletes at the RNC. "The Democratic Party is the farthest thing from being the party of or for women," she said. "They can't even define what a woman is. So how in the world can you claim to defend what you can't define?"
According to the Associated Press, Trump has vowed to keep transgender athletes out of women's sports, adding that if elected, he would ask Congress to pass a bill establishing that there are "only two genders" as determined by birth. This stance is consistent with the views of many Republican lawmakers, who have introduced legislation to ban transgender athletes from participating in female sports.

The debate over transgender athletes in women's sports is likely to continue in the lead-up to the 2024 presidential election, with Trump's pledge to ban transgender athletes serving as a rallying point for conservatives who oppose their participation. It remains to be seen how the issue will play out in the courts, as the Supreme Court has not yet ruled on the legality of transgender athlete bans.
