Former President Trump received enthusiastic support from New York police officers at a rally in Long Island, where he pledged his unwavering support for law enforcement and denounced the Democrats' anti-police policies.
UNIONDALE, N.Y. – New York police officers rallied in support of former President Trump at the packed Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum Wednesday, days after a second failed assassination attempt on his life.

Lou Civello, the Suffolk County Police Benevolent Association president, said the union threw its support behind Trump because he was the only candidate who "backs the blue."
Civello slammed Vice President Kamala Harris for past comments that were both critical of police and in favor of the "defund" movement. Harris, who embraces the title of a former "top cop" on the campaign trail, in a nod to her career as a prosecutor, previously made pro-defund remarks and floated the idea of abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

During Trump’s first term in office, Civello said, the former president played a direct role in quelling a plague of MS-13 violence.
"When they were chopping up children with machetes, he came to Long Island and stood shoulder to shoulder with us," he said.

Thousands of Trump supporters showed up hours early for a chance to get inside the 18,000-seat venue. The PBA held its tailgate across the street from the Coliseum before officers crossed over to attend the Trump rally.
Patrick Ryder, the police commissioner in Nassau County, where the rally was held, vowed earlier this week that the venue would be the safest place in the country.

In a speech that fired up the crowd, Trump promised to crack down on crime, support law enforcement, and defend the Second Amendment.
"We will not let the radical left destroy our police departments," Trump said. "We will not let them defund our police. We will not let them abolish ICE. We will not let them take away our guns."

The rally was a show of force for Trump in a state he narrowly lost in 2020. Trump has been holding rallies across the country in recent weeks, seeking to energize his base and boost his chances of winning the presidency in 2024.
Whether Trump can win New York again remains to be seen. The state has become increasingly Democratic in recent years, and Trump's divisive rhetoric and policies have alienated many voters. However, Trump still has a loyal following in the state, and his supporters are eager to see him return to the White House.

The rally in Long Island was a reminder of Trump's enduring appeal to his supporters. Even after two failed assassination attempts, Trump remains a polarizing figure who inspires both love and hate.
