Judge Merchan has postponed Trump's sentencing until September, sparking a debate among Americans about whether he should face prison time following his conviction for falsifying business records.
Judge Merchan has delayed former President Trump's sentencing until September, pushing the decision beyond the Republican National Convention and into the early voting period for the upcoming midterm elections. This move has drawn mixed reactions, with Americans remaining evenly divided on whether Trump should face prison time.
A recent poll conducted by the AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research found that 48% of adults believe Trump should be imprisoned after his conviction on 17 counts of falsifying business records in New York. However, a significant 50% believe he should not be sentenced to prison.

Political affiliations play a key role in this divide, with nearly 80% of Democrats supporting prison time for Trump, while only about 10% of Republicans share that view. Independents are more split, with approximately 49% favoring imprisonment and 46% opposing it.
Trump's sentencing delay coincides with another poll revealing that Americans are less divided over the potential prison sentence for Hunter Biden, who was convicted on three felonies related to lying about drug use while purchasing a gun. Six in 10 U.S. adults approve of Biden's conviction, and a similar proportion believes he should face prison time.

While Republicans are somewhat more likely to support prison time for Biden than Democrats, a majority of both parties approve of his conviction.
The AP-NORC poll surveyed 1,088 U.S. adults from June 20-24. The results suggest that public opinion on the potential prison sentences for both Trump and Biden remains fragmented along partisan lines.

Trump's sentencing delay comes amidst ongoing investigations into his involvement in the January 6 Capitol riot. It remains uncertain whether these investigations will lead to additional charges or a harsher sentence.
Meanwhile, Biden's legal troubles have raised questions about potential ethical conflicts within the Biden administration, as he has reportedly been present at White House meetings.
