Former President Trump is scheduled to meet with both House and Senate Republicans on Thursday, underscoring his continued influence on the party and the upcoming presidential election.
Former President Donald Trump is set to visit Capitol Hill on Thursday, meeting with both House and Senate Republicans, according to sources familiar with the planning. The meetings come amid a flurry of activity by Trump, who has been actively involved in shaping both his own presidential re-election campaign and GOP races across the country.
Trump's visit to Capitol Hill signals the continued influence he holds over the Republican Party. House GOP leaders have been almost completely in lockstep with Trump since Speaker Mike Johnson took the speaker's gavel in late October, with multiple sources previously telling Fox News Digital that Johnson keeps Trump in the loop before announcing major House agenda items.
Trump's relationship with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., is markedly different. Their public relationship ruptured in the wake of the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot. However, like other GOP congressional leaders, McConnell is endorsing Trump for re-election this November.
Trump's Capitol Hill visit comes as he continues to both shape his own presidential re-election and GOP races across the country. He has been actively campaigning for Republican candidates and has endorsed a number of candidates in key races.
In addition to his meetings with congressional Republicans, Trump is also scheduled to have a sitdown with House GOP Leader Johnson and National Republican Congressional Committee Chairman Richard Hudson, R-N.C., on Monday, according to a source familiar with the planning.
Trump's visit to Capitol Hill and his continued involvement in the GOP leadership indicates that he is a central figure in the party's efforts to regain control of the House and Senate in the 2024 elections.
The meetings also come as the Biden administration faces criticism for its handling of the border crisis. Republicans have accused Biden of exacerbating the situation by rolling back Trump-era policies and failing to secure the border.
In a related development, former Trump White House chief strategist Stephen Bannon has called for Trump to be re-elected president in 2024 to save America from "illegal immigration" and "the ChiComs."
Bannon's comments reflect the growing sentiment among Republicans that Trump is the best candidate to lead the party in 2024 and to address the challenges facing the nation.
